Creating Hope in a Hopeless World - Fr. Jayme Stayer, SJ 10.18.26

Episode Summary

When we hear about another tragic event in the news, it can be easy to feel discouraged, maybe even a little hopeless. And even when we want to do something, we might wonder, What can one person really do? This past Sunday’s Gospel reminds us that our ultimate allegiance isn’t to any king, government, or authority. It’s to God. And that means our faith asks something of us. When we see someone being treated unfairly, we’re called to speak up. When we see people being pushed aside, we’re called to stand with them. And when the world feels like it’s moving in the wrong direction, we’re called to help move it toward something better. Because even the smallest things we do can add up to make a big difference. Faith isn’t just about what we believe. It’s about how we live, how we treat one another, and what we’re willing to give of ourselves. And perhaps that’s where hope begins—not in waiting for someone else to fix the world, but in the small, everyday ways we choose love over indifference, courage over silence, and compassion over contempt. Today, Father Jamie calls us to give ourselves fully to God, speak up when authority fails to protect human dignity, and help build a world shaped by justice, mercy, and love.
