How many times do we use our words to express gratitude for service done by others by simply saying, “ thank you” and feeling like we are off the hook to do our part? Expressing gratitude by recognizing those who have served makes us feel better about ourselves, but does it inspire us enough to become a servant for the marginalized? Chances are we might be spending more energy finding our edge over others, so we feel successful in the office, school, sports, and even traffic! How many times have we thought, how can I be in first place or first in line? Today’s Gospel turns this whole approach upside down when Jesus tells his disciples, “If anyone wants to be first, they must make themselves last of all and servant of all.” In his sermon today, Fr. Ken gives us tips on translating that little voice inside our head asking, “How can I be first?” into “How can I do my part?”.
